Louisiana courts make custody decisions with the best interests of the child in mind. If you have lost custody, it means the court has determined that another parent or guardian can better meet the child’s needs at that time.
When faced with such a situation, it is important to know the steps to take to address the issue and work towards a resolution that benefits both you and your child.
1. Maintain open communication
Losing custody does not mean losing your relationship with your child. It is helpful to maintain open and healthy communication with your child. Keep lines of communication open through visits, phone calls and other forms of contact allowed by the custody agreement. Consistent communication can help reassure your child and strengthen your bond.
2. Follow the court’s orders
Compliance with the court’s orders is essential. Adhere to the custody agreement and visitation schedule diligently. Failure to do so can negatively impact your chances of regaining custody in the future. Document all interactions and follow any court-mandated counseling or parenting classes.
3. Seek mediation
If you believe that changes in circumstances warrant a custody modification, seek mediation with the other parent or guardian. Mediation can be an effective way to discuss and negotiate custody arrangements outside of the courtroom, focusing on what is best for the child.
